Shopping Heaven Beijing

Beijing has “Four Beauties” which make this city synonymous with the heaven of shopping, namely the cloisonné, porcelain, jade ware and lacquer artwork. Besides these ingenious masterpieces, Beijing is also well known for the highly priced art crafts such as carving of commemorative plaques, calligraphy stationery items, oriental water brush painting, silk embroidery, and jewelry of jade and precious stones that are produced by the hands of many professional and famous craftsmen. For those who are fond of folk art, there are wheat dough figurines, plaster figurines, textile figurines, Chinese opera face painting masks, as well as kite and paper cutting artworks. Beijing traditional music instruments are made with superior quality and many people purchase these for ornaments or learning purposes. Beijing local snacks are also a must try shopping agenda.  From preserved fruit and pastry to Chinese medicine and herbal soup, you will find that your money is definitely well spent.

Major Beijing commercial districts are Qianmen (Front Gate) Main Street, Wangfujing Street, Xidan Business Street, Liuli Chang (Glass Ware Factory) Cultural Street, major handicraft centers, Xiushui Street (heaven for fashion apparel).  If you are looking for a higher end shopping experience, Yinjie or Silver Street is the place to be.

Bargaining
It is difficult to bargain in department stores, shopping malls and hotel gift shops as prices are usually fixed. However, it is acceptable to bargain in open air markets, (such as Xiushui Street in Beijing), antique markets, street vendors and other privately owned shops that sell garments, souvenirs and handicrafts.
